Berkheimer, David: 1967

David Berkheimer, of 307 8th Street, Altoona, was shot two or three times by his wife of six months, Fern Berkheimer, during an argument at her parents’ home on July 17, 1967.  She used a Smith & Wesson .32 caliber revolver to shoot him in the leg and the chest.  The shooting actually took place at 1030 3rd Ave, Duncansville; the home of Samuel Berkeimer.  He was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital at 7:11 p.m. at the age of 24.  His wife was 20.  The slender blond then shot herself in the stomach in a suicide attempt, but survived.  She recovered at Mercy Hospital, and was then arrested by State Police.  She was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Roy Hopkins in Allegheny Township and ordered to jail with no bond.

Mr. Berkheimer was a part-time police officer for Duncansville Borough.

Hey, awesome collection. I was checking around after talking today(03/30/09) with a gas company rep. He lived across the street from me growing up. His mother was born and raised across the street. He was telling me about a neighbor whose address was 1917 or 1919 5th Ave. Altoona who was a Hershey ice cream employee who was supposedly killed during a robbery? If you know of any case like that, info greatly appreciated> Thanks.

The case isn’t familiar to me, but we still have several gaps in our time-line. If we find more information, we will email you as well as list it here.
