Bernier, D.:1858
A body was discovered near one of the railroad tracks at the lower end of the yard on October 20, 1858. The man had no marks or bruises aside from a skull fracture, and it was thought he had been killed while attempting to board a moving train. There was some suspicion of foul play, but since the victim still had thirty-nine dollars on his person, there did not seem to be a motive for robbery. A ticket from Chicago to New York was also in his pocket, so it was unknown why he would try to board a train in a manner which would have caused the death. He was identified at D. Bernier.
On Tuesday morning prior to March 24, 1863, an arrest was finally made. Nicholas Ehringer, the owner of the Eagle Hotel in the north ward of the city, was arrested. Martin Harman swore out an oath that he saw Ehringer leave the man on the track the night before the discovery of the body. Harman stated the Ehringer confessed to him, and gave, or promised to give him money to keep quiet. The matter was noted as being referred to court for the next session.

Can you tell me where you got this information? I believe Nicholas Ehringer is an ancestor of mine and I’m interested in learning more about it.
Thanks
