Briney, Mrs. Michael: 1909

Mrs. Briney was shot and killed by Albert Deatto in Altoona, on or about March 2, 1909. He had also shot and wounded James Harris of Gettysburg. After the shooting, Deatto fled the city and spent the night at the Logan House in Hollidaysburg.

A hotel clerk read an account of the crime in the newspaper, and grew suspicious of Deatto. He alerted an officer, who followed the Italian, but after Deatto threatened to shoot him, backed off. Meanwhile, a squad of policemen from Altoona had arrived, and pursued Deatto into an open field near Duncansville. He opened fire on officers Demattis and Brown, who led the chase, and they returned fire. Deatto was apprehended in the field after the pistol fire.
