Hallman, Robin: 1978
On Sunday morning, June 1, 1978, Robin Hallman was visiting her friend, Beth Pfahler, in the Juniata section of Altoona. Mrs. Pfahler was estranged from her husband, Ronald P. Pfahler, and it was believed that the couple had quarreled earlier. During Ms Hallman’s visit, Ronald Pfahler entered the home. He was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun. He fired at the young girl, killing her instantly with a single blast to the head. His wife ran from the home and he pursued her. The killer fired again, striking her in the leg, before fleeing.
Mrs Pfahler, age 20, was rushed to Altoona Hospital, where she was placed in intensive care. Pfahler disappeared. State and Blair County police forces began a manhunt for the killer.
Family members of Pfahler contacted police later in the week and informed them the killer was in New York state and was willing to surrender. Authorities called Pfahler at the number provided, and he agreed to return to the Commonwealth and surrender. He did so in Monroe County about 1:00 pm on June 5, 1978, and was transported back to Hollidaysburg to face trial.
