Also on July 16, 1856, it was noted that on Saturday night, Daniel Neff, an attorney, and David Hewitt, a wagon maker, both of Hollidaysburg, argued at Dannel’s Hotel. Hewitt was stabbed and died the next day. It was between the hours of 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. when Thomas McGee, a Hollidaysburg merchat, Daniel J. Neff went into the restaurant at Dannal’s. They were joined by Daniel K. Ramey, Major George Raymond, David hewitt, and several others.

After the meal, McGee’s party went to the bar. At the door, McGee stopped Hewitt and demanded 87 and a half cents for his share of the meal. Mr Hewit drew his wallet and handed McGee a $2.00 bill. McGee went into the bar to get change made. While he was gone, and there was some discussion about whether it was proper to demand money in a public restaurant.
