Joross, Joseph: 1927
Joseph Joross was murdered on March 16, 1927. The killer’s name was Leo Bore; he was a former Austrian soldier who had moved to Altoona from New England just a week before the slaying. Both were employed at a local hotel; Bore as a cook and Joross as a butcher. The two men argued over the serving of meat to employees. Apparently Joross had something special in mind for a female employee who was his sweetheart, and Bore did not serve her the way Joross thought he should.
The two men had a physical altercation, of which Bore was the loser. However, in a small locker-room, the two men came together again, and Bore stabbed Joross to death with a keen-edged knife concealed in a towel.
Bore was remorseful and confessed almost immediately to an office. He pled guilty to second degree murder before Judge Thomas C. Hare. He was sentenced to 8 to 16 years at Western Penitentiary, and applied for a pardon on January 6, 1933.
